Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) — blind spot monitoring, forward collision warning, lane departure alerts, rear cross-traffic alerts — used to be exclusive to luxury vehicles. Then they became standard on new cars. Now, increasingly, they can be retrofitted to vehicles that never had them. What ADAS Systems Are Available as Aftermarket Retrofits?
Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM): Radar sensors mounted at the rear of the vehicle detect cars in your blind zone and illuminate a warning light in or near your side mirrors. One of the most effective active safety features ever developed — studies consistently show it reduces lane-change crashes. This system can be added to most vehicles with standard blind spot warning lights integrated into mirrors or A-pillars.
Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (RCTA): Uses the same rear radar as BSM to detect vehicles crossing behind you while you're in reverse. An alert sounds before you'd otherwise see the approaching car. Invaluable in busy parking lots.
Forward Collision Warning (FCW): A camera-based system that monitors the road ahead and provides an audible and/or visual alert when you're closing on the vehicle ahead too quickly. Gives you extra reaction time before a rear-end collision.
Lane Departure Warning (LDW): Cameras detect painted lane markings and alert you when your vehicle drifts across them without a turn signal. Helpful on long highway drives and in driver fatigue situations.
360-Degree Surround View Systems: Four cameras stitched into a bird's-eye overhead view displayed on your screen. Exceptional for parking in tight spaces or navigating off-road trails.
